Week 5 Basketball Write-Ups
Week 5
Open
Navarre vs Joy
Team Navarre
Team Navarre got things rolling early as Danzy caught fire from deep, knocking down threes on three straight possessions and making it look like the rim was personally offended. Unfortunately for us, Team Joy decided to match the energy. Not to be outdone, Cal and Scott combined for six threes in the first half, turning what felt like good defense into highlight footage.
Despite the shooting spree on both sides, Team Navarre battled through some adversity. Playing with only five guys, coming off a two-week break, and missing our big man J. Wilson, we still managed to grind it out. Through hustle, effort, and probably a little exhaustion, we kept the game within five points at halftime, proving depth is overrated anyway.
The second half, however, was a different story. Cal and the rest of the Team Joy crew started making easy work of our zone, finding open looks like they had the playbook. Meanwhile, Team Navarre went ice cold offensively, missing shots we were pretty sure went in during warmups.
Still, the fight wasn’t gone. With about three minutes left, we managed to cut the deficit within 10, giving everyone a brief moment of hope and forcing Team Joy to actually pay attention again. In the end though, the comeback didn’t quite have enough gas, and Team Navarre ultimately took the L.
Team Joy
Davenport vs Wall
Team Davenport
Tough loss in our first game back from the holiday break. Team Davenport and Team Wall2Wall had a great battle going. After losing the first quarter by three (arguably our best first quarter of the season), TD looked to be taking a 2-point lead into the half before TW2W drew up a crafty play where Matt Desselle landed out of bounds with the ball, causing everyone on TD to stop while Matt rocketed a pass ahead to Danny Sumner for a wide open three. 27-26 at half.
The third quarter was where things really got fun for TD as Josh Crowdus (on loan from Team West) scored more points in the quarter than we put up as a team in any other quarter (16 points, 4 threes). Unfortunately, after playing the third quarter they made us play the fourth, and that went in the exact opposite direction. It was Death by Desselle in the second half as a whole, as Matt dropped 17 in the 3rd and 4th combined. He and Wall combined for 29 of their 34 second half points. TD went cold as they followed up a 27-point third quarter with a 6-point fourth.
Still, we had a good look at a three to tie the game at the buzzer, but apparently whatever deal with the devil Nelson made to get a Flag Football championship cost him his ability to win a basketball game, as Team Davenport falls to 0-4 when he plays and 1-0 when he’s on the sideline.
NOTES –
– The second and final Sumner Bowl of the Regular Season. Devastated to report that we allowed Danny to get his first Single-Double of the season.
– As balanced a night as we’ve seen, as all six players contributed to the scoring column.
– Crowdus scored as many points in the third quarter for us as he did in the entirety of his own game immediately after. Our bad.

Arcement vs Coogan
Team Arcement
The return to basketball after the holiday break has historically lead to some rough watching and poor shooting performances. TA vs TC matchup did little to change history. Both teams came out sluggish/ slow throughout most of the 1st half. Getting to double digits proved to be a difficult task. Will Arcement decided to fully challenge his team off the break and compound the time off by missing most of his shots throughout the game. After a back and forth first half, TC lead at halftime by 5 points. TA made a few halftime adjustments (let Bickham score most of our points and ride the hot hand) but mainly tightened up on defense. Anderson did a great job making things tough in the 2H on Randy, which spared Bickham some energy for his needed scoring. The game remained close headed to the 4th. A couple 3s from Troullier and Bickham to start the final quarter provided just enough distance for TA to feel comfortable throughout the 4th. Hustling was another factor for TA as they were able to hold off TC in the 4th once they gained the lead with momentum. TA is hoping to get their legs back for next week and get back near the top of the points scored list.
Team Coogan
Arcement vs. Coogan was a highly contested battle that stayed close for all four quarters, with momentum swinging back and forth until the final stretch. Team Coogan came out strong, grabbing an early lead, but they struggled to slow down Bickham, who caught fire and poured in 33 points, seemingly unable to miss.
Team Coogan carried a three-point lead into the fourth quarter, but it quickly disappeared within the first three minutes. From there, Team Arcement seized control and never looked back, closing the game out strong.
Team Coogan will look to regroup and shift their focus to their upcoming matchup against Team Aillet.
Team Coogan scoring:
- Coogan – 19
- Richard – 13
- Randy – 11
- Pecue – 5
- Fornet – 2
- Rutland – 2

Dornier vs Martin
Team Dornier
After a long lay off, the rust was there – but seems to not have gone away as we have been rusty every game — First off, prayer to Umut has he had a massive heart attack last Monday, but thank goodness he is doing better — love ya brother — With Umut out for the season and Thompson doing his world tour, we played with 6 players — thank goodness Team Martin was also a little short handed with 6 — the game was fairly close the whole time, and Team Martin started pulling away in the 4th — then they started missing Free Throws and we clawed our way back to tie it, and even had a chance to win it at the buzzer … then overtime — again, back and forth in overtime but Hurst pulled it out for us scoring all 5 of our OT points to win by one
Kudos to Bass, Gibbons, Freddy Smith, Hurst and Davis for the relentless effort on both sides the ball, with everyone chipping in with some scoring — Team Martin was led by Martin himself and Levesque doing most of the damage and Chuck Smith and Lowe also providing scoring

Warde vs Gage
Team Warde
Team Gage
The game plan offered by opponents will never be the same vs Team Gage. Tejas and Babin threw 4-3 pointers into the basket in the second half. Team Gage was Down 21-4 but got a tip shot put back to uncap the basket by Trevor. This was followed by 3-3 pointers. Two from Babin and one from Tejas. At the End of the third the score was 21-15. Constant chipping away with smothering defense and team gage found a way to get within one point. With 12 seconds to go the ball swung to an open Babin. Nighty night girls! Babin hit nothing but the net and immediately team Gage got into their vaunted man crush defense. Team gage led for exactly 12 seconds but when the dust settled it was Ryan that had team warde Crying.

A really nice professional win! We were missing our two post players, Barbay and Naquin, but still held our own against the two headed monster of Jacob Talley and Tim George. As a team, we played really solid team defense, in spite of being in shorthanded. Our offense was led by Lambert and Esposito with Brent Graham coming through with one of his biggest outputs of the season.
Talley and Crain led Team Talley in scoring. Overall a very hard fought game that could have gone either way.
Pitre vs Boyce
Team Pitre
In a highly physical and hard-fought basketball game that left “many bruised people,” Team Boyce defeated Team Pitre with a final score of 48-43. Team Boyce established an early lead and managed to hold off Team Pitre’s challenges throughout the night, with quarter scores of 15-11, 23-17 at halftime, and 35-31 after the third quarter.
Team Pitre was paced by the sharp-shooting of Clint Smith, who led all scorers with 15 points coming entirely from five 3-pointers. Patrick Walker added 13 points, while Lane Pitre contributed another 8 points to the effort.
Team Boyce secured the win through balanced scoring, the finesse game of Brandon Deaton leading his team with 14 points. Scott Reitzell added 13 points, and team leader Chris Boyce rounded out the key contributors with 10 points.
Team Boyce
Team Boyce came out firing in Q1 anxious to get the new year started off right and built a good lead until former club president PDub took over inspired by relentless defense from our Team Speedo model. The leaning tower of pizza got him so frustrated he made a snide remark to the refs regarding the lack of use of their recently received Christmas gift whistles that it fired up Team Boyce. Haggai got hot after the rest of TB went cold. Clint did his best Steph Curry imitation with three 3’s in 3Q to tie the game up. TB’s run and gun slowed the game down and we were able to make shots (free throws) when it counted to pull away at the end of the fourth. D-Mo’s open three took the spotlight from leading scorer Deaton’s reported first ever BRAAS three pointer? Balanced scoring and good defense gave a preview of what we planned to accomplish in the game. Team Pitre will be a tough team come playoff time!
